October at the Alameda County Fairgrounds has meant Pirates of Emerson for 36 years. The haunted attraction recommends visitors be 13 and older, so for families with young children it was a night out for some members only. This year a second attraction runs at the same time, through the same gate. Pumpkins After Dark, a walk-through display of carved pumpkins with no jump scares, is in Pleasanton for the first time.
The two events cater to very different visitors, and the overlap in their schedules is what matters most for the next three weeks. On most weekend nights through Oct. 31, a younger child and an older sibling can each have a Halloween outing in the same parking lot off Valley Avenue on the same evening.
Thirty-Six Octobers Built for Older Visitors
The Mercury News Halloween guide ranks Bay Area events from cute to nightmarish. It describes Pirates of Emerson as an attraction a Fremont family launched in the 1990s. It now has four separate haunted houses plus food vendors, midway games and live music from a range of metal bands. The guide lists it as not recommended for children 12 and under. The attraction's own FAQ recommends ages 13 and up and requires anyone under 16 to come with someone 21 or older.
The 2026 run goes from Oct. 2 to Nov. 1. Here is what the fairgrounds event calendar lists:
- Hours: 7:05 to 10 p.m., with some nights running until 11 p.m.
- Tickets: $38 for two houses, $48 general, $73 Speed Pass, $108 VIP
- Parking: $15
- Entry: Gate 8 off Valley Avenue. The Pleasanton Avenue entrance is closed for the event.
The ticketing page lists the run as ending Nov. 2, a day later than the calendar and Pleasanton Weekly, so confirm the last night when you book. Tickets are sold online only. Standard tickets are good from opening until one hour before closing, and the compound gates close an hour before the posted closing time. So on a 10 p.m. night, the last chance to get in is around 9 p.m. New this year, according to the Pirates of Emerson site, games are included with most tickets.
The Gentler Event Shares the Same Gate
Pumpkins After Dark fills the gap the haunted houses leave. It runs from Oct. 2 to Oct. 31. After opening weekend it is open Thursday through Sunday. The fairgrounds lists more than 10,000 hand-carved, lit pumpkins, along with carving demonstrations, themed photo spots, treats and roaming performers. The official Pleasanton page calls it family-friendly with no jump scares.
The organizers say plainly who it's for. Kami Van Halst, the event's marketing representative, said this in a press release quoted by Pleasanton Weekly:
"It's spooky and atmospheric without being a traditional haunted house, so it's something families, couples and groups of friends can all enjoy."
The Mercury News guide described it as a jump-scare-free option for kids and easily startled adults at the same fairgrounds that hosts Pirates of Emerson.
Logistics match Pirates in some ways and differ in others. Parking is the same $15, and the entrance is the same Gate 8 off Valley Avenue at 2005 Valley Ave. Entry is by timed slot with limited tickets per slot. VIP ticket holders can arrive any time during event hours on their chosen date. The fairgrounds lists admission at $28.80 for ages 18 and up and $22.80 for ages 4 to 17. Children 3 and under get in free. The ticket seller shows a range of $27.24 to $35.49 depending on date, so the final price depends on the slot you pick.
At the listed prices, two adults and two children ages 4 to 17 would pay $103.20 for the pumpkin walk before fees and parking. That is a little more than two general-admission Pirates tickets at $96.
Where the Two Calendars Overlap
Pumpkins After Dark opens earlier as the evenings get darker. This weekend's slots ran from 7 to 10 p.m. Here is what's left on its schedule, based on the fairgrounds listing:
- Oct. 15 to 18: 6:45 to 10 p.m.
- Oct. 22 to 25: 6:30 to 10 p.m.
- Oct. 29 to 31: 6:30 to 10 p.m.
Pirates of Emerson runs on weekends through Nov. 1. That leaves three remaining weekends when both are open at once. Thursday nights are pumpkins only. Nov. 1, the Sunday after Halloween, is Pirates only, since the pumpkin walk closes Oct. 31.
During those overlapping weekends, the pumpkin walk opens 35 minutes before the haunted houses do, from Oct. 22 on. That gap makes it possible to visit both in one evening.
Fitting Both Into One Evening
For a household with a younger child who belongs at the pumpkins and an older one who wants the haunted houses, the posted schedules allow an evening like this one on Oct. 24 or Oct. 31:
- Park once at Gate 8 off Valley Avenue. Expect the $15 parking charge, and remember the Pleasanton Avenue entrance is closed.
- Book the earliest Pumpkins After Dark slot at 6:30 p.m. so the younger group starts first.
- The older group can walk over when Pirates of Emerson opens at 7:05 p.m. Tickets have to be bought online ahead of time.
- Keep in mind that the Pirates compound gates close one hour before the posted closing time, so arrive well before 9 p.m. on a 10 p.m. night.
- Bring an adult 21 or older along with the Pirates group if anyone in it is under 16.
Neither source gives an estimated time to walk through either attraction. Anyone planning the evening tightly should leave some extra time between slots.
Oct. 17 Brings a Third Event
The weekend of Oct. 17 adds a third, all-day event to the same grounds. The Association of Indo Americans holds its Dussehra Diwali Dhamaka at the fairgrounds that Saturday from noon to 11 p.m. Pleasanton Weekly's preview lists Bollywood dance performances, cultural entertainment, food vendors, shopping and a fireworks show. Online general admission is $12, Dandiya admission is $15, and children 5 and under get in free. AIA's schedule puts the Ravan Dahan and fireworks after sunset but doesn't give an exact time.
The pumpkin walk is open that night from 6:45 p.m., and Pirates of Emerson is in its weekend run. Three events will share the fairgrounds that evening, the busiest night left on the October calendar. If you're going to any one of them, expect more people around the grounds than on a typical Thursday.
After the Pumpkins Go Dark
The fairgrounds goes back to its usual mix of weekend shows in November. The calendar lists these events:
- Nov. 14 to 15: Goodguys 36th Fuel Curve Autumn Get-Together
- Nov. 20 to 21: The Great Junk Hunt
- Nov. 28 to 29: Bamville Card Show
The calendar goes straight from the Bamville Card Show to an event on Feb. 26 to 28, 2027. No December 2026 event appeared in the listings we reviewed. Last year's Winter Glow drive-thru light show ran at the fairgrounds in November 2025. Its Pleasanton page now says the run has ended, and we found no 2026 dates. For now, Pumpkins After Dark and Pirates of Emerson are the only holiday-season attractions on the fairgrounds calendar this year.
The Valley Avenue event calendar is one of the details that shapes daily life in different parts of Pleasanton, from weekend traffic to what's within walking distance.
